Thorn Architects was commissioned to design a photovoltaic array to power a home in Diablo. We extruded the detached inverter room into a light-filled, passive heated and cooled conservatory that met the owner’s program requirements for growing organic vegetables. Operable skylights are controlled by thermostat allowing for passive operation. The building responds to changing environmental conditions under its own PV generated power. A weather station was added to allow for meteorological record-keeping.
