Thorn Architects designed a whole-house remodel with the goal of opening up spaces for light and views. Relocating a laundry and coat closet that had divided the kitchen from the living areas resulted in an open plan where a sculptural staircase became a focal point. The kitchen continues the modern sensibility with clean lines and details. Efficient use of casework maximizes the use of space by utilizing "hidden" corners and providing accessible full-height storage. Designing the stair railing as a bookcase was an opportunity to add exquisitely crafted storage and interest to an area that was previously solely corridor.
